Lifeguard - Part-Time

Location: Knoxville, TN

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley began providing opportunities for youth in Knoxville in 1943.  Today, it has grown into a four-county service area across the Tennessee Valley with 19 Clubs in Knox, Blount, Loudon and North Anderson counties. 

Our Mission:  To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

More than 7,200 at-risk youth and teens take advantage of the programs, activities and services provided by our Clubs. They benefit from trained, caring staff and volunteers who help young people take control of their lives, envision productive futures and reach their goals.

Our organization employs over 450 full-time and part-time staff members. 

Through the Boys & Girls Clubs, young people are shown that someone cares, and there are concerned and capable adults to whom they can turn for assistance.


Position Overview:  The Aquatics Development Worker (Lifeguard) reports to the Club Director. The primary function of the job is to implement and supervise activities within the pool area, shower area and locker room following all licensing requirements.

Key Roles (Essential Job Responsibilities)   

I.  Program Development and Implementation  

  • Monitor and evaluate programs to ensure the safety of members.  Safety is the primary concern of the Aquatics Development Worker.
  • Effectively implement and administer programs, services and activities for members and visitors  
  • Utilize fun and engaging programs to the members in the aquatics area and allow all members to participate, regardless of skill level
  • Maintain a 1:10 staff to members' ratio
  • Post and follow aquatics curriculum
  • Keep track of all members' pool usage utilizing the Visions tracking system
II. Program Supervision
  • Continually interact with all members by providing them with active supervision, motivation and encouragement
  • Always set an example of appropriate dress and monitor members' swim attire, helping them understand what is appropriate in the aquatics area
  • Observe and test all club members before they participate in water activities.  Know and understand the skill level of each member in your group
  • Ensure that all members understand and follow proper personal hygiene practices before and/or after swimming
  • Discipline members fairly, consistently and only according to established policies and procedures
  • Ensure a productive work environment by participating in staff meetings
III. Prepare Youth for Success
  • Know the Youth Development Strategy by instilling in youth feelings of: BelongingUsefulnessInfluence and Competence (BUIC).
  • Create an environment that facilitates the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes:
    • Promote and stimulate program participation
    • Create opportunities for development of strengths and competencies
    • Provide guidance and role modeling to members
Additional Responsibilities
  • May participate in special programs and/or events
  • May be required to be a Monitor on the bus
  • Complete training as required by licensing agency  
  • May be required to help out in multiple areas, as needed
  • Maintain and clean the pool and surrounding area
  • Ensure that the pool has proper chemical levels in the water
  • Keep all swimwear provided by the Club clean and laundered
  • Clean any other areas and bathrooms at the end of the day, as needed
Knowledge and Skills Requirements: 
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Must be a Lifeguard and CPR & First Aid Certified
  • Experience working with children
  • Knowledge of youth development
  • Knowledge of Department of Education/DHS Licensing Requirements
  • Able to motivate youth and manage behavior problems
  • Able to deal with the general public
  • Able to plan and implement quality programs for youth
  • Able to organize and supervise members in a safe environment
  • Able to respond calmly and effectively to emergency situations
  • Must be flexible and able to work well with other team members
  • Able to multi-task
  • Possess problem solving skills

Physical Requirements/Work Environment:

Must be able to --

  • Lift 40 pounds
  • Move quickly to keep up with youth
  • Remain alert and energetic for 8 hours or more
