Detention Center Program Assistant - Part-Time

Location: Knoxville, TN

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley began providing opportunities for youth in Knoxville in 1943.  Today, it has grown into a four-county service area across the Tennessee Valley with 19 Clubs in Knox, Blount, Loudon and North Anderson counties. 

Our Mission:  To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

More than 7,200 at-risk youth and teens take advantage of the programs, activities and services provided by our Clubs. They benefit from trained, caring staff and volunteers who help young people take control of their lives, envision productive futures and reach their goals.

Our organization employs over 450 full-time and part-time staff members. 

Through the Boys & Girls Clubs, young people are shown that someone cares, and there are concerned and capable adults to whom they can turn for assistance.


Detention Center Program Assistant


REPORTS TO:   Director of Field Services

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Prepare, coordinate, and implement the programs of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley with the boys and girls in the detention center facility.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

Program Development and Implementation

·         Effectively implement and administer programs, services and activities for members and visitors.

·         Develop and utilize programs that are fun and engaging

·         Monitor and evaluate programs, services and activities to ensure safety of members, quality in programs and appearance of the branch at all times.

Program Supervision

·         Provide active supervision continually interacting with all members and providing motivation and encouragement. 

·         Discipline members fairly, consistently, and only according to established policies and procedures. 

·         Oversee special programs with children monthly.

·         Consult with parents.

·         Follow up with members once they have left the center.

·         Maintain monthly reports for grants.

Prepare Youth for Success

·         Know the Youth Development Strategy- Instill in youth feelings of Belonging, Usefulness, Influence and Competence (BUIC).

·          Create an environment that facilitates the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes:

o   Promote and stimulate program participation;

o   Create opportunities for development of strengths and competencies

o   Provide guidance and role modeling to members.

Additional Responsibilities

·         May participate in special programs and/or events.

·         May participate in some field trips.



·         High School diploma or GED.

·         Prefer a Bachelor’s Degree or experience equivalent.

·         Experience in working with children.

·         Knowledge of youth development.

·         Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior problems.

·         Ability to mentor members.

·         Ability to make decisions.

·         Ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth.

·         Ability to organize and supervise members in a safe environment.



·         Must be able to lift 40 pounds.

·         Must be able to move quickly to keep up with youth.

·         Must be able to remain alert and energetic for 8 hours or more
